Until fairly recently, encoders designed for IP-based live newsgathering and video file acquisition for broadcast and broadband video required considerable horsepower, usually in the form of a dedicated rack unit box. Although not as speedy as dedicated hardware using DSP and other technology, today's faster personal computers allow encoding to handled by software. Seattle-based Streambox offers that approach with its Streambox ACT-L3 Software Encoder. The software enables Mac OS or Windows PC users to encode, transmit, and handle video file-management tasks.
