Brendon Petty is religious about his work. A preacher's kid with a history of both church involvement and video production, editing, and broadcast experience, Petty has combined his passions by serving as the technical director for North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, Ga.

“It was on a technical research trip that I happened upon an incredibly innovative church in North Atlanta,” Petty says. “The programming was extremely relevant, the teaching was authentic and engaging, the technology was cutting-edge, and everything was executed with quality. I remember thinking that if I ever ended up working in Atlanta, this is where I would want to go to church! Little did I realize that a series of unplanned, yet intentional, events would lead me to join the North Point production staff about a year later.”

North Point uses Panasonic AK-HC931B HD studio cameras and AG-DVX100B cameras to capture its services, which are then broadcast to another auditorium at the main campus, as well as to the church's satellite campuses, Buckhead Church in Atlanta and Browns Bridge Community Church in Cumming, Ga.

“I'm not sure anyone anticipated just how important video would become,” Petty says. “Not only is the use of live video systems essential to the capture and export of our services to campus locations, there is an entire postproduction staff dedicated to generating content that supports the worship service and various environments within our organization. I would say that video has allowed North Point to think outside the box of traditional broadcasting and reach a different type of audience — groups of people who gather together, serve one another, and function as a church in their local communities.”

Looking ahead, Petty says that the church may investigate extending the use of high-definition to all aspects of production. In the meantime, he is enjoying work that is rewarding on both personal and professional levels.

“I find great satisfaction in my work, as it utilizes all my previous experiences,” Petty says. “I truly believe I'm doing what I was created to do. This fulfillment is only multiplied by a purpose to communicate the most important message I know.”
