Pixel pushing moves to a new level

While the results of ATI's buyout by AMD are still to come, it's easy to see Nvidia is taking no prisoners. At Siggraph, the company moved beyond single — even double — SLI'd graphics card setups with Nvidia Quadro Plex 1000, an external box, or Visual Computing System (VCS), as the company has it, that uses eight Quadro FX cards to deliver resolutions as high as 148 megapixels on 16 synchronized digital-output channels and eight HD SDI channels.

This much graphics power is ideal for the coming world of 4K production. At its $17,500 list price, the Quadro Plex 1000 looks to be the most cost-competitive way to use projectors such as the 4K Sony to deliver high-res video and graphics images in realtime to large screens. Modular VCS units can even be stacked into rack-based systems that are said to deliver 25x graphics compute power over similarly sized SGI systems. www.nvidia.com
