Turnkey 4K
While there's still not much 4K post work done on a regular basis, that hasn't stopped companies from devising the technology needed to support such production. At NAB 2005, Globalstor Data presented its ExtremeStor-4K, claimed as the industry's first turnkey 4K server/storage solution that can deliver sustained (read) data rates in excess of 1430MBps, enough for realtime 4K playback. According to company president Scott Leif, doing color correction in full 4K res, rather than applying it to a downsampled version, allows for better color matching, even while it makes correctable artifacts more visible.
A base system comes with either 18TB or an optional 28.8TB of usable storage under RAID 5. While ExtremeStor-4K uses the Windows OS, adding a Fibre Channel switch enables the system to support heterogeneous clients including Irix-, Solaris-, and Linux-based workstations. www.globalstor.com
