Web Video: The Next Stage
For years, Macromedia's Flash has been one of the best apps for creating graphics and animation for use on the Web. With the release of Flash Professional 8, part of Studio 8, the app becomes even more useful by adding a number of new effects, including drop shadow, blur, glow, bevel, and improved text handling and display.
Realtime rendering and compositing of video via the new Flash 8 Video Encoder, however, is the most striking new capability. That's right, compositing. Flash authors now have access to an 8-bit Alpha channel.
Studio 8 also includes Dreamweaver 8, Fireworks 8, Contribute 3, and FlashPaper 2. Among the interesting new features are the ability to work with XML RSS (syndication) feeds and an extensive list of cell phone tools.
With Adobe's purchase of Macromedia, expect further Flash integration with Adobe products. www.adobe.com
