Redbox

For a number of years, companies developing specialized silicon for high-speed, near-realtime 3D rendering were few and far between. Now, after previews at prior NAB and Siggraph conventions, Pixellexis Systems & Technologies plans to show the shipping version of its Redbox processor accelerator — formerly for high-end post, now suitable for more varied application — at the 2008 NAB Show. Employing 32 TigerShark DSP processors, Redbox specs out at 57.6gigaflops and I/O speeds claimed to reach 8GBps. Redbox will offer reprogramability and flexibility for its DSP chipset, making it capable of a wider range of tasks compared to systems that use non-programmable chips.
