The Quadro FX 5600 isn’t cheap, but offers capabilities well beyond anything else available. Price: $2,999
Quadro FX 5600
Video cards get more than the usual bump up in performance, according to Nvidia, with the debut of the Quadro FX 5600. It's not just the usual PR either, as enthusiast sites proclaim this new generation of cards as being speedy and the first to deliver DirectX 10 and shader model 4.0 capability. The new Unified Architecture does away with the previous concept of separate processing pipelines, dynamically allocating compute, geometry, shading, and pixel processing power in a more integrated fashion to optimize performance. The cards can handle huge frame buffers — up to 1.5GB of RAM — a great spur for interactive visualization and realtime processing of large textures and frames. The advent of a unified shader design with a dedicated Nvidia PureVideo core also promises to offer top video playback quality.
