Integrates with Microsoft's Expression Studio toolset to build rich Internet apps. Price: Free (Silverlight browser only)
Silverlight
After years of trying to figure out a viable Internet strategy beyond the browser, Microsoft officially introduced Silverlight at NAB and made version 1 available last month. Developed to compete with Adobe's ubiquitous Flash platform, Silverlight also targets the rapidly growing market for RIA (rich Internet applications). A major hook for the cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in: It can deliver smooth streams of HD via Microsoft's VC-1 codec. Meanwhile, the next release of Windows Server will include Media Pack, a plug-in that will reduce the cost of delivering HD and rich media over the Web.
