For upscaling SD footage for HD productions, the internal After Effects rescaler isn't generally your best bet, especially on detailed footage with text and diagonal lines. Algolith and Red Giant also have good solutions, but Digital Anarchy's ReSizer 2.0 might provide the best power for the cost. ReSizer started as a member of a nine-effect bundle, but due to its popularity, the company broke it out for version 2.0. Notable about ReSizer 2.0 is its included de-interlacer and its reliance on a select few proven algorithms.
