Game play that features large environments gains in multi-threaded texture generation. Price: Varies by game and gaming platform

While multiple-core GPUs are coming to market, game play still improves with software that optimizes specific graphics subsets. One example comes from Allegorithmic, a developer of advanced texturing tools for realtime content creation. Substance — Allegorithmic's recently announced middleware designed for Intel's Streaming SIMD Extensions 4 (SSE4) instruction set and multicore CPUs — streams two to four times more detailed texture data in realtime without using the GPU. Sebastien Deguy, president and founder of Allegorithmic, says that the new technology breaks the limits caused by linear data storage and the erratic seek and random-access times when reading data from DVDs.
