Codex takes recording on the road

With the pending release of the 4K-data-mode Red One from Red Digital Cinema, high-resolution production on the road looks to be picking up steam. London-based Codex Digital offers a new way to record all that information with its Codex Portable, claimed as the first portable disk recorder to handle all formats up to 4K, and it's the first to handle both video and data-mode cameras. The company positions the rugged, self-contained, and “no larger than a toaster” mini deck for run-and-gun production. Using visually lossless JPEG 2000 compression, the Codex Portable can record from two 4:4:4 cameras simultaneously — either independently for A and B camera shoots, or locked together for 3D stereoscopic projects. It can also record from four 4:2:2 cameras simultaneously. Because multiple recorders can be locked together, the company says that six synchronized Codex Portables can become a 24-track video, 48-track audio recorder. www.codexdigital.com
