PD711

In time for NAB, Fujifilm introduced its new PD711, a 23.3GB Blu-ray disc designed for Sony XDCAM and XDCAM HD systems. Data transfer is standard for Blu-ray: 72Mbps for single heads and 144Mbps for dual. Certain hardware/software combos yield 86Mbps for single heads and 172Mbps transfer for dual. As you’d expect, the discs are designed for capturing 1080i video—compressed to various MPEG-2 bit rates, of course—as well as four tracks of audio and metadata. Speaking of those bit rates, the PD711 discs each store 60 minutes of video at 35Mbps, 90 minutes of DV at 25Mbps, and more than 120 minutes of 18Mbps video. Fujifilm says the discs have a unique hard coating to minimize dust adhesion and scratches.
