Bigger and Cheaper Storage

The introduction of SATA (Serial ATA) technology wasn't just about gaining easier-to-deploy, higher-throughput drives. While SATA moves beyond drives employing the legacy parallel ATA standard, it also triggers new price points so that just about any modest shop can now order up multiple terabytes of storage. Only a few years ago, that was something only high-end shops could consider.

Irvine, Calif.-based ProMax Systems proves that point with its SATAMAXe-HD. This 3.2TB (2.9TB usable) external array prices at $5,600, which might be one of the lowest tabs around. Working with both Macs and PCs, the unit offers RAID 0 performance and 4.5 hours of 10-bit uncompressed HD storage.

SATA arrays are also easier to work with because they employ thin, point-to-point cable and connections, doing away with the clunky wide cables and master/slave jumper setup that standard parallel ATA drives use. SATAMAXe-HD includes a four-port SATA PCI Host Adapter (Windows) or a two-port SATA PCI Host Adapter for the Mac, with a four-port version to come. www.promax.com
