RAID alternatives from JMR
From the “OK, so we don't exactly agree here,” department: JMR describes its BlueStor (sporting PeSAN technology) as the first direct-attached PCI storage gear available. Not exactly so, or at least that's what we understood when millimeter gave Ciprico a Vanguard Award in December 2007 for its innovative MediaVault 5108 series PCI Express (PCIe) direct-attached storage solution — which debuted midyear.
But the now-defunct Minneapolis, Minn.-based Ciprico isn't around to complain, so give kudos to JMR for its “disruptive technology covered under U.S. Patent 7,000,037.” The storage array kicks it for delivering speed plus off-the-shelf technology to keep prices down.
There's a self-contained RAID subsystem in each 3RU, which contains a low-cost SAS RAID controller that plugs directly into the BlueStor PCIe slot. The BlueStor PCIe slot sits in a removable I/O module. In turn, that module connects to your workstation or server via an external PCIe adapter card, which allows an external PCIe cable to be attached to the host's PCIe bus.
Using the ubiquitous PCIe bus keeps costs and complexity down by eliminating bridge devices — all the while avoiding SCSI, Fibre Channel, and InfiniBand setups with their pricey cables or switches.
