More, better RAID

Year in and year out, price drops have made hard drives into commodity items. But the electronics behind high-speed interface technology, such as SCSI, hasn't dropped nearly as much in price along the way.

The latest SATA II technology changes that. Paired with inexpensive drives, users can now find good deals in storage arrays. For example, LaCie's Biggest S2S, a five-bay RAID tower, offers up to 2.5TB capacity in a number of RAID configurations at what the company says is a fraction of the cost for a traditional RAID system. The 3Gbps interface — you also get a SATA II PCI-X Card 4E for the workstation — supports uncompressed video editing with claimed 187MBps throughput. The cross-platform (PC and Mac) setup supports RAID levels 0, 0+1, 1, and JBOD. www.lacie.com
