Keep Backups Online

As digital intermediate becomes a more attractive solution to today's ambitious postproduction schemes, keeping terabytes of storage online no longer seems outlandish, especially with the continual drop-in hard drive costs. That's a bit of what's behind Isilon Systems Isilon IQ 6000, the latest model of its clustered storage system that leverages its OneFS distributed file system to store and manage vast amounts of unstructured data.

How much is that? Currently, up to 250TB per array (that's 126TB in a single 42U rack), all of which appears as one very, very large drive to an operating system. Instead of high-cost SCSI drives, the 6000 employs Hitachi's new 500GB SATA-2 drives for speed, capacity, and a not-too-pricey tab. www.isilon.com.
