Faster, higher capacity backup
With hard drive prices continuing to plummet, the practice of using spinning media for backup has gained popularity. But unless you need regular access to the stored material, adding more and more drives doesn't make much sense as maintenance, floor space, and cooling requirements soon wipe out any cost advantage. Tape backup remains a good choice, since those systems are also dropping in price, while improving capacity and throughput. One example: Sony's new line of enhanced AIT Turbo drives and data media. AIT (Advanced Intelligent Tape) uses a 3.5in. drive mechanism, metal evaporated tape in an 8mm form-factor, and dust-resistant design. The AIT-E Turbo has a 20GB native storage capacity (52GB with 2.6:1 compression) and a 6MBps sustained native transfer rate.
