New, lower-cost generations of SAS and SATA I/II 3Gbps interface hard drives have been on the market for a while. Recently, the cost of host bus adapters (HBA) started on a similar downward path. (HBAs offload processing and add connectivity.) Enhance Technology now offers cards with a next-generation SAS Infiniband SFF-8047 chipset with a claimed theoretical data rate of up to 350MBps. As part of the company’s new EnhanceRAID SAS series, the HBA can be used to build a desktop RAID storage system with various hot-swap components and remote RAID management that’s just like pricier enterprise-class RAID storage systems.
