Flash XDR
At NAB Show 2008, outboard camcorder recording systems using HDDs proliferated. One company going the Flash RAM route was Convergent Design; its Flash XDR employs Sony's reprogrammable MPEG-2 codec to record HD onto standard CompactFlash media. Solid-state recording offers weight and power savings, with no fan to add noise either.
Flash XDR compresses HD-SDI video to MPEG-2 4:2:2 full raster (1920×1080) at bit rates up to 100Mbps (long GOP) or 160Mbps (I-Frame only). Also recorded: four channels of embedded or two channels of balanced/mic level analog audio (captured in 16/24-bit uncompressed PCM) as well as timecode (embedded or LTC).
