Sony's switchable stereo/mono ECM-680S MS shotgun mic might let you avoid carrying multiple microphones into the field. Switch modes directly from the microphone itself or from compatible Sony professional camcorders. The mic incorporates newly developed large-diaphragm capsules to ensure high sensitivity (-28dB stereo, 32dB monaural), low inherent noise (less than 20dB SPL, stereo/monaural), and a flat and wide frequency response (50Hz to 20kHz stereo, 40Hz to 20kHz monaural). When used in stereo mode, an LED illuminates and the MS stereo microphone signal is internally decoded to L and R outputs. The two-position (M/V) low-cut switch provides reduction of ambient noise, and the ECM-680 MS can be mounted on a boom pole for additional versatility.
