WKYU-PBS, a PBS affiliate on the campus of Western Kentucky University, seeks an Operations Manager to manage WKYU-PBS Master Control operations and to help oversee the station’s on-air look. This position is grant-funded and is renewable depending upon grant funds availability.

WKYU-PBS, licensed to Western Kentucky University since 1989, reaches an audience of more than 250,000 people in a 17 county area. WKYU-PBS is currently undertaking a large Master Control renovation project that will upgrade the broadcast facility to an automated digital multichannel system. The new Operations Manager will play a pivotal role in the implementation of this new system.

Western Kentucky University is located in Bowling Green/Warren County, about 60 miles north of Nashville. It is an attractive, small city of about 50,000 people. It is noted as a regional center for health care, commerce, and cultural life in South-Central Kentucky. The cost of housing, food and other life necessities is substantially lower than many other U.S. cities. Western Kentucky University’s beautiful and growing campus has approximately 18,000 students, boasting a 20% increase in student enrollment between 2000 and 2004, with campus renovation and new construction projects currently underway totaling roughly $265 million.

RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Recruit, hire, supervise and train student and part-time Master Control Operators.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable and capable MCO.
  • Review all broadcast ops. documentation, follow-up and reconcile discrepancies.
  • Coordinate/direct Master Control operations during special live broadcasts and events.
  • Manage video servers and other computer systems.
  • Willingness and ability to work weekends, evenings and holidays at various times.
  • Serve as WKYU’s coordinator for PBS Connect, an online gateway for the public television community.
  • Work as a team member with other station staff on projects related to the station and the broadcast operation.
  • Facilitate and process satellite videoconferencing requests.
  • Facilitate and process tape dub requests.
  • Coordinate station tours.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelors Degree in a related field is required.
  • Must have experience as a television master control operator and be skilled in television master control operations.
  • Must have supervisory experience.
  • Must have skills, knowledge, aptitude and experience with computers beyond those of the average end user.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in live television broadcasting.
  • Experience in public broadcasting.
  • Experience with broadcast automation systems and digital multicast systems.
  • Experience working with students.
  • Experience managing students.
  • Organizational and follow-up skills are critical to success in this position.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated individual.
  • Excellent team participation and personal leadership skills.

Salary Grade: 107
Expected Salary Range: $28,000 - $32,000 annually – commensurate with experience.
