Doug Walker, president of Alias|Wavefront, an SGI company, has been awarded an honorary degree from Sheridan College in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the field of animation in Canada and internationally. On June 11, 2002 Sheridan College awarded Mr. Walker with an Honorary Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation at the school's Convocation Ceremony for the School of Animation, Arts and Design. This is the first honorary degree that the Sheridan College Board of Governors has awarded to an individual in the 3D graphics industry.
The relationship between Alias|Wavefront and Sheridan College goes back to the early '90s with the school's use of the Power Animator software, forerunner of the renowned Maya software. Maya became the major course software in the program two years ago with the opening of the Sheridan Center for Animation & Emerging Technologies (SCAET), a world center for excellence in film and television, broadcast journalism, animation, special effects, multimedia, and telecommunications.
Since its inception, the Sheridan College animation program has produced hundreds of successful animators, among them Academy Award nominees (Steve Williams, Rob Coleman and James Straus) and an Academy Award winner (Jon Minnis). While many Sheridan graduates have been recruited by U.S. companies such as Industrial Light & Magic, Pixar, and Disney, an equally high number have remained in Canada, working for firms like Toronto-based Nelvana and C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures Inc.
Starting in September 2003, Sheridan will offer the first Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in Animation in Canada. Alias|Wavefront is committed to working alongside Sheridan and all its academic partners to ensure high quality training and education for animators and 3D artists.
