Luxology looks to future

Pixar has been at the forefront of numerous technical breakthroughs, but with most of the innovations kept inhouse. This past October, however, the famed studio announced that Luxology would be licensing a number of its proprietary subdivision surface and rendering algorithm patents. No specific product announcement was made by Luxology. Luxology already includes a polygonal and subdivision surface 3D modeler in its flagship modo 301 app. Pixar has been at the forefront of subdivision surface design with company president Ed Catmull, a lauded scientist in the area. Meanwhile, modo 301 recently started shipping; it sports new snapping and UV capabilities, item animation, and “true” 3D sculpting tools. Luxology TV, a searchable online library, recently launched on the company's website. www.luxology.com
