Making your colors match

Sophisticated color look-up tables from such companies as Kodak and Arri are taking the guesswork out of keeping true-color values when moving RGB images from the realm of computer post through digital output to film.

At Siggraph, start-up Duiker Research addressed an equally important issue with the release of its Color Symmetry suite of plug-ins: how to keep consistent, film-accurate color values across today's range of 2D and 3D apps.

Created by Haarm-Pieter Duiker, the plug-in software allows users to emulate various film looks, which can then be previewed within a wide array of animation, graphics, and effects packages, such as Adobe After Effects, Apple Shake, Autodesk Maya, NewTek LightWave, Iridas FrameCycler, and Assimilate Scratch.

The product goes far beyond the simple CDL standard that's being offered as the one method for color control in a production. For example, Color Symmetry will track color data that's in HDR mode along with 2D data in a log format, which comes in handy when you're compositing 3D characters into a 2D scene, according to Duiker. www.colorsymmetry.com
