Ciprico’s direct-attached storage innovation

A new direct-connect PCIe bus architecture received final approval only this past summer. Ciprico is one of the first to deliver product supporting the new standard with its MediaVault 5100, which has a data rate said to top out at more than 5X the current 4Gbps Fibre Channel speed champion. The MV5100 claims the title as the industry's first eight-drive (MV5108) or 16-drive (MV5116) PCIe storage array based on the new PCIe external expansion and cable connection technique. Users can fill the array's rack-unit frames with either less-expensive SATA II drives or the full-on performance of SAS-type drives. A host-based management utility provides detailed local and remote management of the MV5100's built-in RAID controller as well as support for controller-level spanning of several MV5100 series boxes to create single arrays of up 32 disk drives. www.ciprico.com
