Boxx Goes Red

Boxx Technologies joins the Red parade with its redBoxx (starting at $32,000), a turnkey version of the 3DBoxx workstation that incorporates Assimilate's Scratch Cine software package for DI. What's that good for? Well, the hardware-software combo is specific: It works only with Redcode R3D files, allowing you to view 4K footage shot with the Red Digital Cinema Red One at 2K res in realtime with full de-Bayering, and no scanning and transcoding necessary. “There is something extremely satisfying about just hitting ‘play’ and seeing your beautiful Red footage play in realtime,” says early adopter Emery Wells, who rents Red Ones in New York City.

By including Scratch Cine software, Red's files can be played straight from a CompactFlash memory module or a hard drive over a FireWire connection into the redBoxx. You can also use redBoxx as a virtual telecine: According to the company, it converts R3D format files into DPX or TIFF at a time-saving ratio of 10:1 for 4K to 2K DPX. www.boxxtech.com
