Autodesk Smoke

Bargain Smoke

Although Smoke 2008 was released at last year's IBC, less than a year later Autodesk announced Smoke 2009. With a new lower price point (turnkey HD systems start at $64,000), it might seem that the Montreal-based company is taking note of the slackening economy. In reality, the project has been underway for more than two years to take the timeline-oriented 3D compositing toolset based on Autodesk Flame and integrate it into Smoke's finishing environment.

Playing well with others is key to any final posting, so the new version of Smoke adds support for compressed formats — including Panasonic P2 MXF and QuickTime — and even audio formats, with the capability to import and export Broadcast Wave and MP3 files. A new clip browser, WiretapCentral, enables users to browse clip libraries and encode files through a network-connected web browser. www.autodesk.com
