Sony's new high-end design

While Sony prides itself on its engineering prowess, the company's high-end F900 CineAlta series HD camera hadn't been replaced for six years.

The company resolved that this past December with the unveiling of its new F23 camera system. Joining the HDC-F950 as a top product in the CineAlta line, the F23 offers full 1920×1080 4:4:4 RGB recording, employing three new 2.2Mb 2/3in. progressive CCDs, as well as an improved 14-bit A/D converter.

Support for 1080/23.98p, 24p, 25p, and 29.97p formats, among others, is joined by a new multi-frame-rate and SR motion capability, with 4:2:2 captures at up to 60fps and 4:4:4 captures at up to 30fps. Features include a more ergonomic design, lower weight than the F950 (32lbs. with the lens and viewfinder), and direct docking of Sony's SRW1 digital 4:4:4 recorder. Pricing hasn't been set yet; delivery is expected in late spring.
