Mac boost

Until Apple's move last fall to the PCI Express (PCIe), Mac workstations were in danger of slipping further behind Windows gear, which moved to the new bus architecture earlier in the year.

The move to the new PCIe-based bus design for Power Mac G5s coincided with the release of Blackmagic Design's DeckLink Extreme PCIe. The new card, an upgrade to the popular DeckLink Extreme capture card, uses a PCI Express 1x lane for 2.5Gbps throughput, about six times faster than FireWire-based gear, according to the Australian company.

Since it combines both 10-bit SDI digital video and analog YUV component video on a single card, the new DeckLink can connect to any SD deck. Features include full support for all QuickTime-based apps, support for 24-bit balanced analog audio, XLR connections, SPDIF/unbalanced AES professional audio output, “black burst” genlock input, and RS-422 serial remote. www.blackmagic-design.com
