Suite Deal

Adobe trumps minor upgrades by creating a new level of interactive workflow via its new Adobe Production Studio Premium software suite, which debuts this month. The Production Studio Premium suite includes new versions of three Adobe products that are, hands down, the top apps in their product families: After Effects 7 Professional, Illustrator CS2, and Photoshop CS2. Joining them are three highly competitive new releases of Audition 2, Encore DVD 2, and Premiere Pro 2.

The pro version of the suite also includes a mix of new and upgraded technologies, such as 32-bit high dynamic range (HDR) color support, timewarp, motion tracking, keying tools, distortion effects, network rendering, and scripting.

A high level of interactivity among the apps sets the suite apart from most others. Two tools make it real: Adobe Bridge, a supercharged file manager; and Adobe Dynamic Link, a new technology that saves time by eliminating the need for rendering when you move between programs, or re-rendering when you want to make any change to your composition and see it reflected in context. The speed and flexibility this delivers is considerable, making the sum of the suite much more than its individual programs.

With so many apps cohabiting, a modular, highly flexible GUI is another valuable idea: Grab a subgroup of controls from a drop down submenu and place them where you want, or change the size of one window and all the other open windows resize in concert so you never need to waste time going through them one by one. www.adobe.com/productionstudio.
