Sean Fairburn on the F23
As Sony’s F23 camera system continues to excite the cinematography community and infiltrate into the world of feature filmmaking, one of the members of that community particularly excited about the camera is cinematographer B. Sean Fairburn.
A longtime operator, DP, and digital imaging technician involved in testing and using most of the high-end digital cinematography systems on the market today, Fairburn has been extensively involved with the F23 since its earliest appearances. He periodically teaches workshops around the world regarding the use of the F23, and he recently wrapped a project working for director Bryan Little and cinematographer Brian Reynolds on a video-game inspired, independently produced action movie slated to debut in 2009 called Tekken, which was shot using three F23 cameras. Fairburn served as senior digital imaging technician, a camera operator, and second unit director on that project. Following the recent Cloverfield, and the big-budget, upcoming action film, Speed Racer, Tekken is a member of the early generation of feature films to be produced using the F23 system.
Shortly after wrapping his responsibilities on that project, Fairburn spoke with millimeter Senior Editor Michael Goldman for HD Focus about learning the F23, using it on Tekken, and why he thinks it is an important development for the digital filmmaking industry.
