For me, it works to start Siggraph on Sunday night with the Fast Forward Papers Preview. I'll readily admit that I can't really do most (or really any) of the full Papers sessions, due to the fact that they are usually sufficiently over my head to allow a small jet to pass through. But the Fast Forward Preview is another matter. The paper presenters have one minute to summarize and sell their papers to a crowd of people who presumably do understand them — kind of like those one-minute Shakespeare skits. And that I can manage. It's a fun, upbeat way to kick off the week.

Monday, of course, there will be the Lucas keynote and Q&A, 1:15 to 3:15 p.m., Hall A. Lucas has been more loquacious in recent years; click here for our interview with him at last year's Visual Effects Society Awards. Also on Monday you can hear the man who developed the crowd-generation software for Lord of the Rings — Stephen Regelous — talk about the state of CG crowds, 8:30 a.m., Petree Hall D. See p. 53 of this issue for more on how Massive is being used today. Madagascar's jungle creation is also on the docket for Monday, 3:45 p.m., Petree Hall C. (And if you want more Madagascar, you can bury yourself in the details on Sunday 1:45 to 5:30 p.m., Hall A.) Budding Linux activists can learn the realities of the law 3:45 p.m., Room 502B. That night, before the parties, go hear Henry LaBounta and friends talk about where games are going, 6:00 p.m., Hall A.

Outsourcing activists can hear the pros and cons Tuesday 10:30 a.m., Petree Hall C. Also on Tuesday, it's more on HDRI. USC's Paul Debevec is among the speakers, 8:30 a.m., Room 515A. Rising star Shane Acker is rumored to be presenting on the making of 9, this year's Best of Show film, 12:30 p.m., Room 409 A&B. Entry-level mo-cap fans will want to do a half day on The Polar Express with Rob Bredow and friends, 8:30 a.m., Hall B.

Wednesday, Eric Armstrong and Frank Vitz of Electronic Arts will be among the panelists who discuss the development of AI characters, 10:30 a.m., Petree Hall C. At 3:45 p.m., Pixar's Tony DeRose, PDI/DreamWorks' Andrew Hendrickson, and ILM's Steve Sullivan discuss a classic Siggraph topic the relationship between academic research and movie making.

And then if you still haven't had enough Polar Express, go offsite to the California Science Centers' IMAX Theater for a look at the train ride in stereoscopic 3D, 11:30 a.m.

For more on what to see at Siggraph, go to our preview microsite at millimeter.com/siggraph2005. The Emerging Technologies Gallery is, of course, a must-see.

And please double-check dates and times, as programming is subject to change.
