Online Opportunities

Over a nearly 40-year history, leading filmmakers have been generous with us — giving interviews that were directed at their peers and, as a result, took a different take on their work than what they discussed in the mainstream press.
When I've done these interviews myself, I've often felt that filmmakers were relieved to be able to discuss the things that preoccupied them about process, as opposed to some of the things they get asked for general audiences; I enjoyed hearing people try to work out in words things that they had already puzzled over in more visual and tactile ways during production.
Inevitably, an article can only capture part of this — one of the things you can never really get onto paper is how articulate and pensive people can be. As people who can communicate visually, filmmakers are often very lucid with words as well. So it has been a benefit of the Internet age that we can share some of our recorded interviews with readers now — most recently, Clint Eastwood on his digital experiences on two Iwo Jima films and Martin Scorsese on (among other things) color for The Departed. It's taken a us a little while to get the hang of the audio production; the Eastwood interview is much clearer than the Scorsese one, which sounds like what it is — a telephone call. But it's worth a little struggle to hear. The same is true of David Fincher's interview, which is also on our podcast page at digitalcontentproducer.com/podcasts. Or you can hear a small directors' series together at digitalcontentproducer.com/mil/goldman_podcasts.
It's an important part of our mission to take broad topics that are part of mainstream culture and try to make them useful to professionals. To that end, we've also decided to throw our hat in the ring of user-created video. Since there is no denying the sheer distribution impact of the YouTube you-niverse, we gave some thought to how that structure could work in a professional setting.
There are lots of good short-film sites, so we didn't go there. But we think we have a way to help people hook up with collaborators, freelancers, and services that hasn't been done very comprehensively yet. With support from Dell and Sony, we are in development and look forward to a spring launch. In this issue and in subsequent ones, we'll be doing what marketing folks call “rolling out” information. In the meantime, go to reel-exchange.com/first2know. Also, if you'd like to be personally involved as a beta user, let me know at cwisehart@prismb2b.com. It won't take much time, and we'd appreciate the input.
