Sigur Rós “Glosoli”
Electronic soul musicians Arni and Kinski, previously of GusGus, create a Little-Drummer-Boy-meets-Pied-Piper-meets-Lemmings fairytale for Sigur Rós' latest threnody. In this version, however, the wee ones avoid the fall and instead learn to fly. For the effect, the children were instructed to run toward the edge of the cliff but to jump at a point before the actual drop. A false edge was then created by painting out the rest of the cliff in Flame. Label: Geffen Records, Los Angeles; Production: Exposure Films, London; Director: Arni & Kinski; Editors: The Whitehouse, London; Postproduction: Absolute Postproduction; Visual Effects Producer: Lisa Vaughan; Visual Effects Supervisor/Lead Flame: Ben Robards; Combustion: Nathan Kane, Mark Epstein.
Chipita International “Kiosk”
A shared affinity for croissants leads a young man on a sports bike to offer a ride to an old timer. The same love for croissants prompts the latter to accept. Company 3 and Nice Shoes make the meeting even more meaningful by tuning up the cherry red on the motorcycle for a cheery feel to the spot. Agency: M.L. Rogers, New York; Production: Supply & Demand, Los Angeles/New York; Director/DP: Tony Kaye; Editorial: Chemistry, New York; Editor: Bruce Ashkinos; Online Editorial/Visual Effects: Pure, New York; Visual Effects: Jason Cunningham; Telecine: Company 3/Nice Shoes, New York; Colorists: Tim Masik, Company 3, Scott Burch, Nice Shoes; Audio Post: Sound Lounge, New York; Mixer: Rob Disani.
Jiffy Lube “Slow World”
Even the coffeemaker brews slowly in this :30 spot that illustrates the frustration of being a fast-paced executive stuck waiting for an oil change. The crucial challenge for the editors was pairing the sound effects with particular frames, as when the elderly woman turns the page of a car magazine with an audible “plod.” Agency: McCarthy Mambro Bertino, Boston; Production: Sandwick Films, Hollywood; Director: Jeff Gorman; DP: Curtis Wehr; Editorial: Version2, New York; Editor: Micah Scarpelli; Postproduction: Company 3/Version2, New York; Colorist: Tom Salamon, Company 3; Online Editor: Tim Farrell, Version2; Composer: Justin Hopfer, Version2; Audio Post: HSR, New York; Mixer: Steve Rosen.
Pella “Backyard”
A woman shows off her new windows with cordless shades to a friend while her husband, tending the barbecue in the backyard, falls prey to a disastrous slapstick routine involving the family dog and a fire. Muted tones on the inside draw attention to the action on the outside. Agency: Brand Buzz, New York; Production: House of Usher, Los Angeles; Director: Kinka Usher; DP: Bob Yoeman; Editorial: Cut & Run, New York; Executive Producer: Susan Willis, Editor: Chuck Willis; Visual Effects: My Active Driveway, New York; Visual Effects: Steve Choo; Colorist: Fergus McCall, The Mill, New York; Online Editor: Josh Williams, Cut & Run; Mixers: Rex Recker, AudioEngine, New York, Rob Sayers, Sound Lounge, New York.
