Ciprico has been selected by Drastic Technologies and Digitalvideo Computing (DVC) to provide its MediaVault 4210 storage array for DVC’s ClipRecorder XTrem 2K Digital Disk Recorder and workstation. The selection has resulted in an OEM agreement with the two companies, as Digitalvideo Computing serves as Drastic’s manufacturing representative and master distributor in Europe.

Ciprico’s dual-channel, 4Gb Fibre Channel 4210 RAID array will provide high performance and high-capacity storage for DVC’s flagship ClipRecorder workstation, targeted at HD and 2K and 4K digital intermediate applications. The powerhouse combination is ideal for applications requiring sustained throughput performance and high availability such as HD encoding for HD and Blu-ray Discs; HD broadcasting; HD presentations and visualization; and 2K and 4K digital intermediate processing, editing, and grading. DVC’s ClipRecorder is based on Drastic’s software technology.

Drastic’s software provides Digital Disk Recorder (DDR) functionality for DVC’s ClipRecorder as well as Drastic’s third-generation New Titans series DDRs. The production-proven software provides direct integration with VTR serial RS-422, server serial protocols, and universal network interfaces. These real world interfaces, along with multiheaded editing, media management, and a complete software media translation system, provide seamless access to the most complete digital intermediate interface available.

“Ciprico’s MediaVault 4210 arrays deliver industry leading bandwidth, capacity, and performance capable of handling Drastic’s most demanding applications,” says James Brooks, VVW development manager for Drastic Technologies.” The high-performance, interoperability, and throughput capabilities enabled by Ciprico’s MediaVault are crucial for uncompressed SD, HD, 2K, and 4K film resolution capture, as well as delivery. This in effect not only benefits Drastic, but also our European partner, Digitalvideo Computing, and their ClipRecorder workstation.”

“We are excited about the throughput performance delivered by Ciprico’s MediaVault RAID systems,” says Andrew Mazanec, support manager for Digitalvideo Computing. “With the 4210 model and ClipRecorder XTreme, our combined solution delivers smooth dual-channel 2K recording and playback or single channel 4K playback. Ciprico deeply understands the video and HD market, and as a result, MediaVault’s integration with our ClipRecorder was easy: simple plug and play.”

Both ClipRecorder and Drastic’s Titan series of servers benefit from Ciprico’s third-generation storage solution, which features a dual 4Gb Fibre Channel interface, and is capable of sustaining over 600MBps throughput. The high-performance, high-capacity system is ideal for capture, editing, and delivery of realtime HD and 2K film resolution. In addition, MediaVault supports Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Unix, SGI IRIX, and Sun Solaris operating systems, while enabling users to benefit from storage capacities up to 10TB.

“We’re pleased to have the opportunity to deliver top-performance storage solutions for such industry leaders as Drastic Technologies and Digitalvideo Computing,” says Steve Merrifield, president and CEO for Ciprico. “Our partnership is a testament to our commitment to enhance the digital video and film, streaming, and broadcast experiences with our high-performance storage solutions. We are poised to meet the biggest and most complex storage challenges in HD and digital video, and this partnership further validates the capability of our MediaVault technology to do so at the highest level.”
