Canon updates a favorite

Canon's unique design for its XL1 miniDV camcorder gains an “evolutionary” update with the July introduction of the XL2, Canon's final pro SD camcorder, according to the company.

While some expressed disappointment that an HDV version wasn't announced, the camcorder won't disappoint, as it features solid design improvements, including three 16:9 native, progressive-scan CCDs (switchable to 4:3); an interchangeable 20X zoom; built-in shoulder pad; and XLR audio connectors. Other features include a choice of 60i, 24p, and 30p frame rates; increased control of gamma, knee, black, color matrix, vertical detail, sharpness, coring, noise reduction, color gain, color phase, and film grain; and built-in SMPTE color bars and reference tone. A free software developers kit lets users create setups that appear in the camcorder's menu. www.usa.canon.com
