Get MPEG'd

Realtime encoding of HD takes a lot of compute power. That's what Doremi Labs says it promises to deliver this month with ORCA, a realtime MPEG-2 encoder for HD and SD video. ORCA provides users with a wide choice of encoding parameters, such as GOP structure, 4:2:0 (DV), and 4:2:2 encoding profiles and compression bit rate. The ORCA card accepts HD-SDI and SDI video from which it extracts video, audio, and other ancillary data. Audio can either be uncompressed or compressed using MPEG-1 layer II or Dolby AC-3. Ancillary data can be saved as MPEG-2 metadata. ORCA comes with a Windows 2000/XP driver.

Price: $12,000 (ORCA SD), $21,000 (ORCA 420), $21,000 (ORCA HD 420), $22,000 (ORCA HD 422)
