FedEx “Perspective”

In a sly shift in perspective worthy of The Twilight Zone, the new FedEx racecar turns out to be a toy on a child's racetrack. The household's tabby is not impressed. For the miniaturization effect, NASCAR driver Jason Leffler was shot in live-action on an actual track. Leffler's car was then matted off the racetrack footage and composited onto the slot car track in the kid's living room. Camera shake was added to intensify the feeling of being on a track. Agency: BBDO, New York; Production: MJZ, Los Angeles; Director: Craig Gillespie; Editors: MacKenzie Cutler, Jun Diaz; Facility House: The Mill, New York; Telecine: Fergus McCall; Flame: Dirk Greene, Angus Kneale.

Kelloggs “Tiger Power”

Tony the Tiger gives Geraldo a run for his money as an investigative reporter. The famed Felis tigris questions concerned wildlife mothers about their children's eating habits. To create Tony in stop-motion, a blend of postproduction and puppet work was used. Tony was constructed from coils and paddles covered with 1/4in. of clay. The other characters were primarily foam with precise computer-milled steel armatures. Agency: Leo Burnett, Chicago; Production: Bent Image Lab, Portland, Ore.; Director: David Daniels; DP: Mark Eifert; Character Design: Peter de Seve; Animators: Jeff Riley, Rob Shaw; Puppetmaker/Painter: Katie Scott; Mold Makers: Matt McKenna, Tim Tanner; Armaturist/Rigging: Jeanne McIvor, Sarah Hall; Model Maker: Stevie Pagano; CG: Jim Clark, Darrin Casler.

Jones Soda “3-Legged Mutt”

Who can harden their heart against a three-legged dog begging for spare change? Certainly not the hipster stepping off his skateboard to shop at his local bodega. On his return, the skater fashions the dog a prosthetic from a Blue Bubblegum soda bottle. The spot was filmed in b&w with color treatment to the bottles. Hoagie Carmichael adds the perfect accompaniment to the “clink, clink” sound of the bottlecap hitting sidewalk. Agency: Jones Soda, Seattle; Production: Uncle, Santa Monica, Calif.; Director: Rent Sidon; DP: Jaron Presant; Editorial: Lux Editorial, Santa Monica; Visual Effects: Animal, Pittsburgh.

Low “Monkey”

The indie-pop trio goes with a toy monkey on a midnight car ride into the depths of the Vadnais Regional Park, Vadnais Heights, Minn., on a snowy afternoon to be later abducted by an alien spaceship. If only the labored storyline were as effective as the stark, washed-out scenery courtesy of colorist Oscar Oboza. Label: 16mm, Sub Pop Records, Seattle; Production: Harder/Fuller, Minneapolis, Minn.; Director/DP: Phil Harder; Studio: Mainstream Communications, Bloomington, Minn.; Telecine: Oscar Oboza, Hi-Wire, Minneapolis; Editor: JoLynn Garnes, Jagged Edge, Minneapolis; Flame: Scott Wenner, Jagged Edge, Minneapolis.
