Phoenix Zoo “Monkey Village”

A play on the sensationalized news stories of children falling into lion pits at the zoo gives this :30 spot its punchline. A couple panics when they think their son's fallen into the monkey cage. They're relieved to discover he's in the interactive Monkey Village at the Phoenix Zoo. The lush Tropics Trail stays true to its name with help from colorist Crash Carlucci. Agency: R&R Partners, Tempe, Ariz.; Production: Trengove Films, Phoenix; Director/DP: Mark Trengove; Editorial: Blade, Phoenix; Audio Post/Sound Design: AudioEngine/West, Phoenix; Poststproduction: Riot, Santa Monica, Calif.; Colorist: Crash Carlucci.

Lexus “Highway”

What makes this :30 spot elegant isn't the way the Lexus ES glides on scenic roads, although that's part of it. What's especially charming is the minimalist soundtrack that eschews mechanical noise for an organic, hypnotic sound. Paul Bessenbacher's clean score is carried by a solo piano. The sound design scheme uses a glass sound for headlight closeups and wind sounds for a revving engine. Agency: Team One, El Segundo, Calif.; Production: Rock Fight, Hollywood; Director/DP: Daniel Barber; Editing: Rock, Paper, Scissors, Los Angeles; Music: Admusic, Santa Monica, Calif.; Composer: Paul Bessenbacher; Postproduction: Company 3, Santa Monica; Sound Design: 740 Sound Design, Santa Monica; Sound Designers: Eddie Kim, Mike Johnson.

HP “Printer”

Thierry Poiraud created a stylized world set to the rhythm of a printer. The voiceover marvels at the science inside HP printers. The science of this quick-cut, effects-heavy spot is also something at which to marvel. Agency: Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, Production: Paranoid Projects at Tool, Santa Monica, Calif.; Director: Thierry Poiraud; DP: Adam Kimmel; Managing Director: Phillip Detchmendy; Telecine: Riot, Santa Monica; Flame/Online Editor: Claus Hansen; Editorial: Chrome, Santa Monica; Editor: Hal Honigsberg; Visual Effects; BUF, Paris; Sound Design: Stimmung, Santa Monica; Final Mix: Lime Studios, Santa Monica.

Pinnacle Foods, Mrs. Paul's “Swingset”

Not just a fish out of water, but a fish on a swingset in a park makes the mother of a transfixed little girl reach for her daughter in a panic. “Get comfortable with fish,” says the voiceover. To keep the deadpan effect, editor Steve Hamilton worked out every nuance of the single-shot scenario, creating more than 25 versions before settling on the final. Agency: Foote Cone Belding, New York; Production: Biscuit Filmworks, Hollywood, and Reginald Pike, Toronto; Director: Perlorian Brothers; DP: Joe Zizzo; Editorial: Mad Mad Judy, New York; Editor/Sound Designer: Steve Hamilton; Colorist: Fergus McCall; Flame Artist: Murray Butler; Audio Mixer: Glen Landrum; Composer: Human.
