Xilinx, Inc., a leader in programmable logic solutions, today announced that Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC) has adopted Xilinx low-cost Spartan-3E field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for its latest handheld HDV camcorder, the GY-HD250. Xilinx programmable devices substantially reduced development costs for JVC and provided improved functionality. Launched October, the GY-HD250 series features two HDV formats, progressive and interlaced, thus fully covering the 720p50/60 format while allowing output of the 1080i50/60 format. The GY-HD 250 series also features SD/HD-SDI output with embedded audio/timecode.
“Xilinx Spartan-3E FPGAs made a huge contribution to the development of our HDV camcorder that meets the countless needs of the professional video market. We fully expect high-performance and low-priced professional HDV cameras to boost new demand in various fields, including broadcasting and digital cinema. Professional HDV is one of the most important strategic fields for our company, and we intend to strengthen our ties with Xilinx in the future to accelerate our development of competitive and unique products,” said Kazuya Yamada, engineering manager at JVC.
In 2005, JVC developed a professional HDV series boasting features such as high image quality and system performance and mobility, aimed at the professional video market. The flagship product of this series, the Spartan-3 FPGAs enabled HDV camera-recorder GY-HD100, is also enabled by Spartan-3 FPGAs. The GY-HD250 is the higher-grade type of this award-winning model.
The Spartan Generation has been adopted in a wide range of consumer applications such as DVD players, plasma display panels (PDP), and HDTVs. Since its 1998 introduction, the Spartan series has grown from zero to 26 percent of total company revenue with 150 million devices shipped to date.
With the release of the Spartan-3E family, Xilinx introduced a low-cost Spartan FPGA family with new features designed specifically to address the requirements of the high volume consumer market. For more information on the Spartan-3 Generation, visit www.xilinx.com/spartan.
