How to handle HDMI

It's a fact of life: Although many bemoan the burden of built-in copy protection, the new HDMI HD monitor interconnect is in our future. (HDMI is an HDTV connection format for transferring uncompressed digital video with HDCP copy protection and multichannel audio.)

At least Blackmagic Design offers an inexpensive solution for anyone who plans to work with a monitor that uses an HDMI video connection. The Australian company's Intensity capture and playback card enables HDV camcorder users to view uncompressed video on monitors and video projectors featuring HDMI interconnects. One neat trick: After HDV footage is recorded uncompressed via HDMI, HD graphics and effects can then be added, with the edited video retaining full HD resolution and color depth. The card fits into a Windows or Mac OS X PCI Express slot, and can switch among 1080HD, 720HD, NTSC, and PAL video standards.
