Monitoring HD
Affordable HDV is exciting and new, and so is the need for an affordable lightweight HD field monitor. Perhaps the best out there is ERG Ventures' HDM-EV85 8.4in. LCD. The EV85 uses two of the same lightweight 7.2V batteries as Sony's Z1 (good riddance, bricks) for nearly three hours of display. It connects directly to the Z1's component analog 1080i HD output and can also display 720p and composite SD. Simplicity of use masks such advanced features as color temperature and gamma adjustment, as well as adjustable frame markers. Its recent use on an HDV documentary in New York about famed graphic designer Milton Glaser had the crew raving, especially after adding a Studio 1 Productions padded handle for handheld use.
