HD at IBC

As industry professionals move into the final two weeks before heading to the International Broadcasters Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, HD Focus is taking a look at some of the new high-definition technologies that will be shown at the European film and broadcast community's biggest meeting ground and exhibition floor, Sept. 7-11 at the RAI Convention Center.
Anton Bauer will show two new power packs for HD digital cinema camcorders. The ElipZ, handheld battery, light, and flexible grip system is compatible with the Panasonic P2 line of cameras. The new CINE-VCLX is a multipurpose 560W hour power source for cameras such as the Sony F-23 CineAlta, in which the pack can supply both 28 and 14 volts on a single cable through an eight pin Lemo.
U.K.-based Cooke Optics will be exhibiting the /i dataLink box, which mount directly to HD cameras in order to record key lens and camera data such as focus, zoom, and iris settingswhich assists various aspects of postproduction, providing added assistance and information to visual effects and digital intermediate artists. By documenting the metadata for post, significant time-savings can be had and well-matched CG content can be achieved. Red Digital Cinema, Dalsa, and Arri are among the companies that will be announced as Cooke's /i technology supporters.
Da Vinci will be showcasing the new Resolve 4.2 version for its 4K digital mastering suite, which includes Resolve TLCa full telecine and advanced machine control with additional support for QuickTime, TIF, and TARGA file formats. A new 2K node in the latest Resolve version provides new functionality including six-vector corrections, ripple, and support for external mattes which allows for quick isolation of colors or regions for selective processing
Digital Vision will be exhibiting a new HD finishing tool, which offers tapeless grading and finishing for broadcast, HD DVD, and Blu-ray. The updated technology within its Nucoda line of non-linear grading for HD broadcast and 2K or 4K digital intermediates supports an HD video environment with a fully data-centric workflow and offers extended support and integration for broadcast, distribution, servers, and playout devicesincluding Avid and DVS Platform servers.
For the first time in public, Ensemble Designs will display the new BrightEye 92-A HD downconverter at IBC. The small, palm-sized piece of equipment can be controlled via the front panel or through either Mac or PC software and is targeted at broadcast, sports, and outside broadcasting (OB) applications.
The HVS-1500HS and HVS-600HS compact switchers are new offerings from For-A that support all of the most widely used HD formats. The HVS-1500HS provides an optional frame memory that allows for up to three seconds of recorded HD footage in each of its two channels. The HVS-600HS, also dubbed the "HANABI Portable" acts as a lower-cost option for 10-bit, 4:2:2 HD signal processing with up to 8 HD/SD-SDI inputs and five HD-SD-SDI outputs.
Studio Network Solutions is unveiling the EllipseT and EllipseT Enterprise A/V optimized 4GBps Fibre Channel HBAs for both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs running OSX. The Ellipse T line will be able to provide a shared storage solution for uncompressed HD footage up to 2K.
Beyond the Exhibition Floor, IBC's conference lineup will also provide a few HD-based panel discussions, including "The HD optical media debate," where an industry technology panel will look at HD delivery media, including HD-DVD and Blu-Ray (Sep. 6, 2p.m. in Room L).
"High definition television: new formats, new challenges, new opportunities - in association with SMPTE" will offer a discussion of the new format transition, plus a tutorial of the background fundamentals and understanding needed within media and entertainment facilities as HD broadcasting continues to roll out (Sept. 8, 10a.m. in Room O).
Other sessions that are HD-related or of specific interest to the digital cinema realm include: "Digital movie cameras and the integration of look management into the workflow" (Sept. 8, 4p.m. in Room L); "High definition past, present and future - a celebration of 25 years of HD development in Europe" (Sept. 9, 9:30a.m. in the Auditorium); "HD production standards and studio issues" (Sept. 9, 11:30a.m. in the Forum); and "The digital cinema experience: is it affordable enough for the big time?" (Sept. 10, 9:30a.m. in the Auditorium).
