Introduced last fall and now shipping, Sony's HDC-P1 offers a new level of capability for unmanned and point-of-view HD cameras. Based on the company's flagship HDC series studio cameras, its compact body size (approximately 8"x5"x3" with a weight less than 4lbs.), was touted as ideal for creating a 3D camera rig.

Well that's what Band Pro is now promoting. Its rig builds around Astrodesign's 24in. SM-3324 monitor. The company claims a wide viewing angle, while the integrated 3D processor can process multiple 3D formats (line-by-line, field sequential, and side-by-side) and automatically display them as a 3D image.

The processing is fast enough that the unit can handle two HD-SDI feeds (single or dual) simultaneously and output a 3D image, an important capability for a DP on location.

The HDC-P1 itself employs a 2/3in., 2.2-million-pixel CCD block and supports a range of formats including 1080/50i, 59.94i and 720/50P, and 59.94P, with 23.98PsF, 24PsF, 25PsF, and 29.97PsF capabilities available as options via software upgrades. The camera is also fully compatible with the existing range of studio control panels for the HDC studio range, taking much of the hassle out of integrating them together in a networked control system.

The rig, spec'd with color-matched Carl Zeiss DigiPrime and DigiZoom lenses, is expected to deliver around the beginning of March, according to the Burbank, Calif., company. Pricing wasn't announced, but since each camera runs about $30,000 alone, be prepared to bring your checkbook.
