7-Series upgrade

As solid-state recording and new generations of digital audio integrated circuits come to market, portable audio recording continues to advance. At AES 2007, Sound Devices announced a new firmware revision for its 7-Series digital audio recorders that brings open-source Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) compression to the lightweight (around 2lbs.) device. The upgrade preserves all pulse-code modulation (PCM) audio data and iXML metadata, yet it reduces files in a range from 2:1 to 5:1. The entry-level 702 portable audio recorder features 2-channel recording onto CompactFlash cards, while writing and reading uncompressed PCM audio at 16 or 24 bits with sampling rates between 32kHz and 192kHz. Features include microphone preamps with phantom, limiters, and high-pass filters and AES3 (XLR) or AES3id (unbalanced AES on BNC) digital inputs and AES3id outputs.
