Improvements in CCD technology are bringing to market cameras with cleaner images and with the ability to shoot in lower light. While Hitachi's SK-HD1000 HDTV studio and field-production camera was introduced last year, this updated version now employs a new generation of 2/3in., 2.2-million-pixel, progressive CCDs to deliver a sharp 1100-TVL resolution at a quiet 60dB. Other improved features include 14-bit A-to-D converters and a 12-vector masking system (for better control of color hue and saturation). The CU-HD1000 CCU offers a choice of fiber or digital triax/coax transmission, embedded digital audio in the HD-SDI output, and optionally, it can cross-convert to make 720p out of 1080i.
