Edirol F-1
For a company that has made its name in audio, adding the ability to record video in the field didn't seem much of a hassle, considering the advances in electronics and HDD recording. The Roland Edirol F-1 — which fits on a standard camcorder battery plate — captures HDV and DV via its 6-pin FireWire input, offers two additional channels of higher-quality 16-bit/48Hz audio (which lock to the standard audio tracks), and multiple power options. The video and audio store on removable 120GB hard drives, while the built-in RGB output allows thumbnail viewing. Because it uses an IP address, it can be controlled over a network.
