Higher-res recording for less

NAB attendees had a banner year for booth surfing, pausing to gawk at the many new digital cinema camera systems coming of age.

However, there were also a number of less flashy but important storage tech debuts. Take Wafian’s HR-2. The Solana Beach, Calif.-based company employs CineForm’s 444 codec to record at 360Mbps, a data speed that the company claims will yield better quality even when compared to recorders running at 440Mbps. The device records to both AVI and MOV formats, while basic controls are handled by a one-button record/review and built-in touchscreen LCD panel.

The rackmounted, 10-bit, 4:4:4, dual-link video recorder lists for $25,000—a breakthrough price point. www.wafian.com
