Driving DV

Finding something new in camera support gear isn't common; countless knockoffs of Steadicam-like support, for example, can be found at every show. That's one reason Manfrotto's Fig Rig stood out at its debut at NAB 2005.

Named for director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas), who helped develop the hand-held DV support, the device offers the shake-free stability of a tripod with the framing flexibility of hand-held shooting. The hoop design — think repurposed car steering wheel — gives it an immediate familiarity. With your hands at 3 and 9 o'clock to hold the rig, there's plenty of room to hook lights and mics around the perimeter or with an optional brace. To get a low-angle shot, just hold the Fig Rig by the top of the rim. www.bogenimaging.us
