Affordable HDV is exciting and new, and so is the need for an affordable lightweight HD field monitor. Perhaps the best out there is ERG Ventures' 8.4in. LCD HDM-EV85. The EV85 uses two of the same lightweight 7.2V batteries as Sony's Z1 (good riddance, bricks!) for nearly three hours of continuous display. It connects directly to the Z1's component analog 1080i HD output and can also display 720p as well as composite SD.
Simplicity of use masks advanced features like color temperature and gamma adjustment, and adjustable frame markers. Its recent use on an HDV documentary in New York, directed by Wendy Keys and about famed graphic designer Milton Glaser, had the crew raving, especially after adding a Studio 1 Productions padded handle for handheld use. www.erg-ventures.com
